Wooden spoon

From the recovery of the Mary Rose, a tudor warship that sank in 1545 during the battle of the solent.Found on the deck just above the carpenters’ cabin, this is one of only two small spoons carved in maple. It is incised with a ‘Z’ or a reversed ‘N’ at the back of the neck. These are small and light, and other spoons made of wood or horn are likely to have floated away or perished. Only three other eating spoons were found, all are pewter. This and many more of the carpenters artefects (including his skull) were modelled using photogrammetry and can be found at: www.VirtualTudors.orgIf you have an interest in osteology, or know anyone who does, please sign up to help out with our research in the “Research” tab of the website. With thanks to www.MaryRose.org
