Southgates – Medieval stone-lined pit

This small stone-line pit, probably late medieval in date, was recently excavated at Southgates in Leicester. The model shows the pit after its contents had been fully excavated. Damage to the stone lining in the pit’s south-east corner is caused by ground settling into an earlier pit underneath. The pit was in a back yard of a medieval property that once fronted onto Southgates. It is unclear what it may have originally been used for but similar pits excavated elsewhere in Leicester were used as privies.
