Mould for the production of a pilgrim’s badge

mould for the production of a pilgrims badge 3d model

Stone mould engraved for the production of a pilgrim’s badge related to the shrine of St Thomas Becket in Canterbury. This fourteenth-century mould shows Becket’s return from exile in Normandy. Becket is shown holding a cross-staff and crozier, wearing archiepiscopal vestments, and raising his left hand in blessing. He is riding a dappled horse, led by a small figure and the path is shown by a band of decoration and floral motifs.Moulds such as this one were used to make base-metal souvenirs sold to pilgrims at holy sites across Europe in the Middle Ages. The shrine of Becket at Canterbury was hugely popular and badges sold there depict a variety of subjects, such as Becket’s dramatic martyrdom in the cathedral, items of his official clothing, or the first letter of his name. These badges possessed traces of the saint’s famed sanctity and allowed the pilgrim to take that power with them away from the site.
