The Mapes Casino was schedule to be demolished in January 2000. The Nevada Neon Project was racing to save the neon before it was lost forever. Will Durham made a deal with the city of Reno that he would trade in the lettering from Harold’s Club in exchange for the Mapes cowboys. Before he reached the site, the cowboys were stolen. After a public plea to return them, one set was returned the next day. However, the other set was feared to be lost forever.Two years later, Will inquired about an ad on Craigslist. He discovered someone selling the other set of Mapes cowboys. He notified authorities and told them that the property for sale was stolen. The cowboys returned home and were restored for many to enjoy.
