This is a model of the foundations of one of the slave cabins at Kingsley Plantation in north Florida. This site is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve which offers many great, significant sites from Florida’s past that you can visit (http://www.nps.gov/timu/learn/historyculture/kp.htm). The plantation was owned by several individuals, but the structures created for the enslaved people of African descent date to the period when Zephaniah Kingsley owned the site (1814-1837). These structures are made of tabby, a type of concrete mixture made from oyster shells, and are up kept by the National Park System. This particular cabin has been maintained to show how they would have fallen into disrepair. The slave cabins have been the site of archaeological investigations which have shed new light into the cultural practices of the enslaved individuals who were forced to live here.
