Medieval Gambeson 3d Model
Medieval Gambeson 3d Model – Fabric Simulation and Structural Fidelity
The intricate quilting patterns on this gambeson mirror the utilitarian aesthetic of late-medieval infantry protection while drawing distinct inspiration from the gritty art style of Battle Brothers. Marvelous Designer handled the intricate cloth simulation, allowing the fabric to drape naturally over a humanoid form. The resulting folds and tension points convey a sense of weight and thickness essential for protective padded armor.
This asset transcends simple geometry by capturing the physical properties of heavy linen and wool. The artist meticulously adjusted the internal pressure and physical properties of the simulated patterns to ensure the quilting looked authentic. Every seam and stitch placement follows the logic of traditional garment construction, providing a solid foundation for further digital detailing.
Medieval Gambeson 3d Model – Texturing the Wear and Tear
Substance Painter allowed for the creation of rich, multi-layered PBR materials that tell a story of past battles and long marches. The base fabric shows subtle variations in weave and color, while areas of high friction exhibit realistic fraying and dirt accumulation. Leather straps and metal buckles receive the same level of attention, featuring micro-scratches and oxidation that enhance the overall believability.
The color palette remains grounded, utilizing earth tones and desaturated hues to maintain a gritty medieval atmosphere. This approach ensures the armor fits seamlessly into dark fantasy settings or realistic historical recreations. By focusing on material definition, the textures distinguish between the rough texture of the gambeson body and the smooth, worn surface of the leather fastenings.
Technical Workflow and Topology
Blender served as the primary hub for sculpting fine details and executing a clean retopology process. The artist focused on creating a mesh that maintains a silhouette of high fidelity while respecting the limitations of modern game engines. This careful balance ensures that the asset looks exceptional even when viewed from close proximity.
Efficient UV unwrapping maximizes texel density, allowing the high-resolution textures to shine without visible distortion. The workflow prioritized a non-destructive pipeline, enabling quick iterations on the design and material properties. This technical rigor results in a professional-grade asset ready for immediate implementation.
- Optimized polygonal flow for high-performance rendering.
- High-resolution PBR maps including albedo, roughness, and normals.
- Physically accurate fabric simulation for realistic cloth behavior.
- Clean UV layouts that minimize seams and maximize detail.
Versatility in Game Environments
Integrating this medieval gambeson 3d model into a game engine provides immediate visual fidelity for any character-driven project. The asset functions perfectly as a standalone piece of armor or as an under-layer for plate mail and chainmail. Developers can easily adjust the material parameters to suit specific lighting conditions or art styles.

Seller Original Description
Been a while since I last posted in here. That’s another semi-fantasy medieval piece I’d like to share. I built the design myself, yet it was still heavily influenced by the Battle Brothers game by Overhype Studios. I used Marvelous Designer for simulation and Substance Painter for texturing. The rest of the work (modeling, sculpting, retopology and UVs) was performed in Blender. Hope you like it. Cheers.
