Lt Gen Sir D Bernard Army Dress Uniform

He was born in 1883 in Galway Ireland, his military career started in 1902 when he joined the Rifle Brigade, he served as a staff officer with the 10th (Irish) Division and the 4th (Australian) Division in the First World War as a Captain then Major then as a Brigade Lieutenant Colonel, he was Mentioned in Despatches (MID) on four occasions and awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1917. He was awarded the 1914 Star with clasp for being in France from August 1914, the British War Medal and the Victory medal he was also awarded the Belgian Croix De Guerre. He took over Command of 1st Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles in 1927 until 1930 then as the Colonel of the Regiment in 1937 during this time he also served as the Governor of Bermuda. Returning at the outbreak of World War Two to work on staff duties were he worked to smooth the paths of units, the men and their dependants. He was Knighted and made a Companion of St Michael & St George.
